The
Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival 2018, Nottingham!!
The
Business played a 90 minute set on the Friday evening at the 2018 Robin Hood
Beer & Cider Festival at The Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham!!
This
is was the new venue for the Festival due to works being carried out at
Nottingham Castle, which had been used in previous years.
The
Main Stage was located in the backstage area of the Arena amongst Brewery Bars
and Food Vendors, and proved to be a popular attraction for the many visitors to
the Festival, pictures to follow shortly.
The Business were very
pleased to be asked to play at The Newark Christmas Market & Winter Feast last
weekend. Although it was pretty cold, the deluge of snow that was promised did
not materialise and the event was allowed to go ahead.
We took to the stage (artic
trailor) at 12:40 and rattled through a 35min set of classic covers in front of
a small but appreciative crowd.
We'd like to thank
everyone that braved the cold and came out to support the event and live music
in Newark
We also played two sets
in the Market Place on Saturday 23rd organised by Newark Town Council for the
Festive period.
October 2017
"Business as Usual!"
Things
are
back to normal at Business HQ and we're looking forward to a busy festive
period!
Due to a very sad close
family bereavement the band took a few months out from gigging in June, July and
August whilst we contemplated the future of the band.
We started rehearsing
again in September and went back out on the road in October with gigs at two of
our favourite venues, The Navigation & Chesters
May 2017
The
Business made a welcome return to The Lord Harrowby Grantham for one of John's
legendary Beer Festivals. The great british weather proved to be a pain in the
arse as usual so we managed to shoe horn ourselves into the front window of the
pubs lounge! The real ale flowed and a great night was had by all!!
Looking forward to
getting back to The Harrowby in 2018!
November 2016
Been
a busy couple of months since the August update! We had a great weekend at The
UK Autumn Motorhome &
Caravan Show at Newark Showground at the beginning of September and will
hopefully be back again in the Spring. October kicked off with another fantastic
night down at Chesters in Balderton, always well supported this is getting to be
one of our favourite venues! Another five in the diary already for 2017!!
Footage Filmed at The Autumn Motorhome & Caravan Show, Newark Showground,
03/09/16
Friday the 14th saw us make a welcome return to the Nottingham Robin Hood Beer &
Cider Festival. A very busy teatime slot meant that we could sample the many
excellent brews on offer once we'd got the gear off stage. We'd love to make
this a regular fixture and will be in contact with Nottingham CAMRA come next
year!
The
Business "Unplugged" made a couple of outings in October, first to the Nav for a
Sunday Night Session and then to Oscar's Inn on a busy Saturday night. This
format seems to be becoming ever more popular with our fan base and I must say
we're enjoying the gigs too!
As
many of you probably know by now, 2016 is the 10th Anniversary of The Business
and to mark the occasion we arranged a special show at The Navigation to
celebrate. We played two sets on the night, the first featuring our ex bassist
and great friend Ian "Lobba" Dobbs on Bass and Vocals, Neil took to the drums
once more and included many of the songs from when we started The Business way
back in 2006!
The
second set we played as the current three piece line up and included all our
favourite crowd pleasers we've covered over the last decade! We even had Phil
from the Nav up on the drums for an encore of Black Sabbath's Paranoid!! Rock on
\nn/ \nn/ !!!
Since
our last update in May, we've been busy doing several "Unplugged" shows at The
Navigation on a Sunday evening, The Lord Nelson at Sutton on Trent and our
second visit to Oscar's Inn in Newark. The full band has also been busy over the
August Bank Holiday weekend with shows at The Navigation and The Goose at the
Bank in Grantham.
We're
looking forward to playing for the first time at The UK Autumn Motorhome &
Caravan Show at Newark Showground in September carrying on from our
knockout performances at the Spring Show over the past four years and have a
special treat lined up for all our fans to celebrate our 10th Anniversary on the
28th October at The Nav!!
Another busy month in May, a twinning association dinner dance for Newark Castle
Rotary Club at Kelham House Country Manor Hotel got the month off to a swinging
start, followed by our first visit to the new Chameleon at The Kings in
Grantham. Fantastic night! The place was heaving all night with extremely
enthusiastic and very loud late night revellers! Looking forward to another gig
at this great venue later in the year.
May
concluded with a Friday night down at The Nav and our second appearance at
Newark CAMRA Beer Festival on the Saturday evening. We hit the stage at 6:30 and
entertained the crowd for an hour and 10 mins before retiring to the Bar Tent to
sample a few, (well quite a lot actually!!) of the fine brews on offer!
April
2016
We've been very busy so far this year and recently played at the UK Spring Motorhome & Caravan Show at Newark Showground.
Had a great couple of days providing the Friday & Saturday evening entertainment in the Sir Stuart Goodwin Pavilion and an "Unplugged" lunchtime session in the Cedric Ford.
We'll be "Unplugged" again at Oscar's Inn in Newark this Saturday from 9pm and at The Navigation on Sunday 17th. With a full show at The Chesters, Balderton on Saturday 23rd, April's shaping up to be a good month!!
November 2015
Newark Xmas Lights Switch On 2015, Newark Market Place
Had a great time at the Xmas Lights Switch On in Newark in spite of the
inclement weather!
Thanks to Liz Hobbs Group for the opportunity to play again, photos of the event
below:-
The Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival 2015, Nottingham Castle
We had a fantastic time
playing at the 2015 Robin Hood
Beer & Cider Festival in the grounds of Nottingham Castle on Saturday the 10th
October! We performed a 90 minute set from 4pm to 5:30pm which included two
encores! It was a pleasure playing in front of such a large, enthusiastic and
appreciative crowd! Hope to be invited to play for the good people of Nottingham
again next year!!
The
Business performed their second "unplugged" show at The Prince Rupert, Newark to
a packed pub on Friday night! We had a great night and would like to thank
everyone that came down to see us.
Here's a
press cutting from The Newark Advertiser about the evening.
Next
"unplugged" outing will be at Oscar's Inn, Newark on the 20th November!
August 2015
Been a
while now since we updated the news page and it's also been a very busy year so
far! January saw us make a return to The Fox & Crown in Newark, last gig there
was way back in November 2011! A trip down the A1 to Oscars Wine Bar in Grantham
and our first outing of 2015 to the Navigation in Newark completed February's
engagements. In March we played for a fourth consecutive year at the Spring
Motorhome & Caravan Show at Newark Showground and also played our first gig of
the year down at The Moorings.
In April we
reformed No Claims for a one off charity night at Grantham Squash Club in aid of
The British Heart Foundation.
The evening
was a great success and raised £1,300 (Click on the picture for the write up in
the Grantham Journal)
In May it
was back down to Grantham again for a Beer Festival at The Lord Harrowby and a
second visit to The Navigation in Newark. June, and a welcome return to The
Chesters in Balderton, which is now under new management following the
retirement of Michael Hedworth and another outing to The Moorings.
June also
saw the debut of The Business "Unplugged" at The Prince Rupert in Newark. This
is a new venture for the band in an acoustic format and we have been busy
learning over twenty new songs for the show with the aim of playing smaller more
intimate venues.
July and
August included a second visit to The Fox & Crown, debuts at The Flying Circus
and The Sixty Four Sports Bar at Radcliffe on Trent and a second visit to The
Chesters. With another twelve gigs lined up for the rest of the year and also some
more new venues to visit we're looking forward to what should be a great
conclusion to 2015!
December 2014
We
kicked off the festive season with a Charity Ball at Newark Town Hall in aid of
Reach Learning Disability, a charity that supports more than 150 people with
learning difficulties in Newark, Southwell and Mansfield. The evening was a huge
success helping the appeal reach £10,000. See full article from The Newark
Advertiser below.
The now
customary "Christmas Party" at The Navigation was a fantastic night and very
well supported as usual. We finished off a very successful 2014 at The Castle
with a special guest appearance by former bassist Ian 'Lobba' Dobbs who joined
us for the evenings festivities!
We would
like to take this opportunity to thank our families, friends and fans, old and
new, for their loyal support through 2014 and look forward to seeing you all at
our gigs in 2015.
HAPPY
NEW YEAR!!
November 2014
A 'Ladies
Night' dinner/dance at the Masonic Hall in Newark, the third trip of the year to
The Castle, which is now under new management and a trip out to Hucknall in
Notts to entertain the fans at Hucknall Town Football Club concluded our
November outings. We're now blowing the dust off our seasonal songs and looking
forward to Christmas gigs at Newark Town Hall, The Navigation and a New Year's
Eve party at The Castle! We wish all our fans a very Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year!!
October 2014
Three gigs
in October, starting with our fourth and last visit of the year to The Moorings
and then on to The Navigation the following week. Both excellent gigs as usual
with a good turnout. We then travelled north to The Romans Rest in Worksop for
our first outing to this modern Greene King "Meet & Eat" Pub. The pub has
recently undergone a refurb and this was the re-opening night. Fantastic crowd,
we're very much looking forward to returning in the New Year to entertain you
crazy people again. Keep an eye on the Gigs page for new dates.
September 2014
September
saw the band return to The Chameleon Music & Steak Bar in Grantham for their
second visit. After battling through the street closures and crowds attending
the Gravity Fields Festival celebrating Sir Isaac Newton, we were set up, sound
checked and ready to kick off the show to a packed pub. Superb night as before
culminating in three well deserved encores! Thanks once again to Simon and the
rest of his staff, we're definitely looking forward to returning to The
Chameleon in the New Year!
August 2014
August
turned out to be a busy month with our annual outing to The Lincoln Green in
North Hykeham, a car rally at a scout camp in Calverton then gigs at The Castle
and The Navigation in Newark. We've also been busy working on new material, some
of which we debuted at The Nav. There will be more new material coming into the
sets for our shows leading up to Christmas.
July
2014
The
Business made their debut at The Chameleon Music & Steak Bar in Grantham on the
26th July. We'd been looking forward to this gig since booking it some time ago
and had heard many good reports about the venue, we certainly weren't
disappointed as it certainly lived up to expectations! Really good in house PA
setup, which means we only had to hump the backline in, and a brilliant host.
We've been booked to play again at the end of September and would love to make
this a regular venue.
After
playing two dates in June, Oscar's Wine Bar in Grantham on the 7th and The
Castle Newark on the 11th the band broke up for their well earned Summer break,
returning for their first public outing on July 20th at The Moorings, Newark.
Good turnout as is now customary for our visits to The Moorings on a very hot
and sticky Sunday night down by the riverside. The guys played two full sets as
usual despite the extreme heat, including some material we haven't played for a
while and the first airing of Billy Joel's classic, My Life. The only casualty
of the evening was the poor old Ashdown Bass amp that went 'pop' halfway through
White Wedding! Poor thing!
May
2014
The Band
have been busy throughout May with gigs at The Navigation, The Great Northern at
Carlton on Trent, which we haven't played for quite sometime, a first for us at
The Goose at the Bank in Grantham and a return to the Inn on the Green at
Coddington. We'll be back at the Inn on the Green in December and hope to get a
return gig at The Goose in the future as it's a decent venue to play.
April
2014
After a
couple of great party gigs in Newark and then Retford we finished off April with
a fairly quiet but otherwise enjoyable gig at The Moorings. We've got a busy May
coming up with some more parties, a Bank Holiday visit to The Navigation, a Beer
Festival and a trip to a new venue for us in Grantham. Check out the gigs page
for more details and dates.
March
2014
After a
couple of weeks off we were raring to go for the Spring Motorhome and Caravan
Show at Newark Showground on the 22nd. This is the third year on the trot that
we have played this event and the weather was thankfully somewhat different to
last year when there was snow on the ground. The event boasts two venues for
show goers that are staying over for the two day event. In the main Cedric Ford
Pavilion there was a Motown band and comedian Mick Miller, he's the bald guy
with the long hair, as someone put it and The Stuart Goodwin Pavilion aka "The
Pig & Whistle" where we were playing. It was a great night with both venues
full, had some great comments after the gig and met up again with some familiar
faces from last year. We have already discussed returning for a fourth year and
look forward to entertaining you all again. The 29th saw us back at Oscar's Wine
Bar in Grantham for the second time this year. As before, we set up and sound
checked to an empty venue then sat and waited for the punters to arrive. Sure
enough by the time we hit the stage at 9.30 the place was almost full and there
was a good atmosphere. Finished off the evening playing to a bunch of Super
Heroes, Banana Man and Wonder Woman included, it's not often you can say that!!
February 2014
It's been a
busy month kicking of with a Private Party at The Woodhouse Arms, Corby Glen,
Valentine's night at The Navigation in Newark, a dinner dance at the Bentley
Hotel, North Hykeham, entertaining the delegates at the 15th Annual Conference
of The British and Irish Group for the Study of Personal Disorders (BIGSPD) and
the 9th Nidotherapy Workshop. Finishing off at The Old Kings Arms in Newark,
which was taken over by the current management team just four weeks ago and
already looks likely to become another buzzing venue on the Newark music scene.
The last time any of us played at The Kings was back in the 80's in the upstairs
bar when Neil appeared on the drums as part of Newark Band Avalon!! Things have
certainly changed a bit since then! We look forward to playing at The Kings
again in the near future and hope to return to the Woodhouse Arms at Corby Glen
also later in the year. We will of course be back at The Nav in May for a
special Sunday performance on May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
January 2014
Sunday 26th - The Atrium,
Newark - First visit for us since they started band nights again at this modern
bar/night spot in Newark. Not a brilliant turn out but this is probably a
reflection on the fact that there are two other venues in Newark staging bands
on Sunday nights, which is a shame because this is a great venue with a sizeable
playing area for bands and good acoustics. Lets hope that as the weather picks
up through the spring and into the summer more people venture out to see bands
and fill our music venues. Thanks to all our loyal fans that came down to see
us, (you know who you are) and we hope to see you all down the Nav for
Valentine's Night on the 14th February.
**Note: The Moorings Gig on
the 10th July in the above cutting should read 20th July**
Saturday 18th - Oscar's Wine
Bar, Grantham - Great gig at Oscar's in Grantham last night! Good sized crowd
all night, not bad to say we're still in January. Thanks to everyone that came
out to support us. We'll be back at Oscar's on the 29th March.
Next gig is at The Atrium in Newark next Sunday night. This will be a first for
us, we'll be starting around 9pm and entry is free!
Sunday 12th - Great gig to
kick off the New Year down at The Moorings. Thanks to everyone that braved the
poor weather to come and support us and live music in Newark. We've got some new
songs in the pipeline for 2014 and look forward to seeing you all again at
future gigs, we're at Oscar's in Grantham next Saturday and then The Atrium in
Newark on the 26th. See ya soon!
December 2013
What a
cracking weekend to round off our 2013 gigs! - Friday 20th and Saturday 21st at
The Navigation and The Castle in Newark. Massive turnout for the Navigation gig
on Friday, with people from all generations thoroughly enjoying themselves to
the music and by the looks of it majority of the bar stock! At one point we had
people up on tables and even a mosh pit going on in front of us! Had to swap 'I
Predict a Riot' for 'Angels' to calm them down! The Castle was also very busy
all night on Saturday if a little less frantic, no mosh pit and definitely no
impromptu stage invasions! Nevertheless a very enjoyable evening amongst
fantastic company.
It's hard
to believe that we've now been a three piece for a year and a busy year it's
been too. We've played 35 gigs in total at Pubs, Clubs, Weddings, Parties,
Shows, Village Fetes and even the turning on of the Xmas lights in Newark Market
Place! We'd like to thank everyone that's turned out to support us in 2013, It's
been a pleasure to play for all our fans and friends, old and new and we look
forward to another great year in 2014.
Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year from theTHE BUSINESSand crew!!
November 2013
Sunday 24th
- Newark Xmas Lights Switch On - Fantastic experience playing in Newark Market
Place as part of the Christmas Lights Switch On event. We arrived at 9.30am on a
chilly but thankfully dry Sunday morning to set up our backline on stage and
then retire to the warmth of Cafe Amore for a Sausage & Bacon Roll, for those of
us who are watching our waistlines, teas and coffees all round and to witness Mr
Rollitt devour a Full English! (Looked very tasty too!)
We took to
the stage for our 30 minute set a little after our advertised slot due to some
organisational difficulties with the schedule, starting off with 'Walk of Life'
followed closely by the Tears for Fears classic 'Everybody Wants To Rule The
World'. We performed seven songs in total to an ever increasing crowd, including
other 80's classics 'Town Called Malice' and James' 'Sit Down' the ever popular
'Mr Brightside' and 'Dakota', finishing off with Van Halen's 'Jump'
The crowd
continued to grow during the afternoon until the market place was packed for the
final act, Joseph Whelan (X Factor Fame), and a wonderful firework display after
the lights had been turned on. We have since heard from the organisers, Liz
Hobbs Group Ltd, that the event was a great success and drew in record numbers.
The
Business would like to thank Newark Town Council and Liz Hobbs Group Ltd for the
kind invitation to play at this years event and look forward to working with
them again in the future.
Friday 8th
- The Navigation, Newark - Another fantastic night down The Nav! What more can
we say! Thanks to everyone for coming down to see us. We'll be back for a
Christmas Special on the 20th December.
October 2013
Friday 4th -
The Navigation, Newark - If The Moorings is the place to be for music on a
Sunday night, then The Nav is certainly the place to get yourself down to on a
Friday! Great night once more, good turnout as usual, some new songs and a
couple of old ones back in the set for the night and a guest vocal appearance by
Heather Flint
on backing vocals in Suspicious Minds. Thought she was absolutely brilliant!
September 2013
Sunday 29th -
The Moorings, Newark - The Moorings has really become the place to be now for
live music in Newark. The place was packed all night and people were up and
dancing from the second song of the first set and kept on going right through to
the third encore of the second! We had a fantastic time entertaining you all and
look forward to returning in the New Year!
Wednesday 4th -
The Castle, Newark - Great night at The Castle as always with a good turnout for a
Wednesday. Thanks to everyone who came down to see us and support the pub. We'll
be back again in December.
August 2013
Saturday 31st -
The Inn On The Green, Coddington - First outing to this village pub and eatery.
Good night but not really a dancing crowd. May be back here again in the future,
watch the gigs page for more details.
The boys were
back from their summer break with a busy Bank Holiday weekend. Two gigs, the
first at The Lord Nelson, Sutton on Trent and the second at The Navigation,
Newark. Saturday Night outside at The Lord Nelson Pub in Sutton turned out to be
a rather damp affair! We arrived on site and had to choose an area in the
marquee erected in the car park that looked like it might stay dry if the
heavens were to open as predicted. Gear set up and sound checked, Beer sampled
and selected from the Bar and sit back and wait for the crowds to arrive.
Unfortunately the weather had other ideas and absolutely chucked it down from
around 9pm and didn't stop, rather putting the dampener on the whole evenings
entertainment. Not to worry though, the band played on, people danced or rather
paddled around the beer garden and in the deluge of water that was now rising in
the marquee and a great night was had by all who ventured out. Thanks to the
Landlord and staff of the Nelson and the guy with the brush who prevented the
flood from drowning our gear!
Onward to
The Navigation for a Bank Holiday Sunday slot. These must be amongst some of our
favourite gigs. Lovely warm evening, large enthusiastic crowd, great venue, what
more can you say! We're looking forward to returning to The Nav in October and
also will be putting a date in for The Nelson at Sutton for later in the year.
July
2013
Saturday 13th -
Collingham Cricket Club - This was our debut down at 'The Dale' on what was
probably the hottest day of the year so far! We played a couple of sets to a
small but very appreciative crowd and as usual didn't fail to get them up
dancing. Thanks to Doreen for organising the event and keeping live music down
at 'The Dale' We look forward to returning next season.
Friday 5th -
The Navigation, Newark - Friday nights are becoming very popular down at the
Nav. Great turnout on a warm summer evening with as many people outside the pub
as in. A lot of new faces in the crowd, which is always great to see. We'll be
back on Sunday 25th August for as Bank Holiday Special, hope this fine weather
holds now for the rest of the summer!
June
2013
Wednesday 12th
- The Castle Pub, Newark - Second visit to "our local" The Castle this year and
another great night in this "compact and bijou" Newark music venue. Decent
turnout for a Wednesday although it looked a bit doubtful at 8.30pm as we sound
checked to an empty pub! Still, we kicked of at 9.15pm with Walk of Life by Dire
Straits and they all came flooding in. Look forward to coming back to The Castle
in September.
Saturday 8th -
Chesters, Balderton - We always look forward to playing at Chesters and
certainly enjoyed the gig last night. The bar was busy all night and filled with
some new and many familiar faces all in fine voice (even had them dancing during
the second set!) Thanks to everyone that came down to see us, we'll be back at
Chesters in September.
May
2013
Friday 24th -
18th Newark Beer Festival, Riverside Park, Newark - Can't believe it's 13 years
since two of us were last on stage at the 2002 Beer Festival as part of No
Claims, Neil (Drums) and Kelv (Guitar), and it was good to be back entertaining
the many Real Ale enthusiasts in attendance on Friday night. The good old
British weather seemed as though it would impact on the numbers attending the
Festival as Friday morning dawned wet, windy and cold (more like November than
the end of May!) but thankfully it stopped raining and the wind died down during
the afternoon so there was a reasonable turnout for the evening session. The
Trailer Park Blues Band kicked off the evening with a 1/2 hour set of Classic
Blues showcasing the Newark Blues Festival 2013 set to take place in the town on
the 6th and 7th September, then we took to the stage at around 8.45 to perform a
selection of our repertoire featuring material from the mid 60's to the present
day. We finished off the set around 10.15pm with the crowd singing along to Sex
on Fire and an encore of Jump before grabbing a couple of well earned Beers
before time was called at 10.30. We'd like to offer our thanks to Duncan for
including us in the line up for this year's festival and to Dave and Mark from
Forefront for the lighting and sound. Hopefully it'll not be another 13 years
before we return!
Saturday 18th -
Oscar's Wine Bar, Grantham - Another trip to Grantham! Getting to be a habit.
First gig for us at this town centre modern Bistro/Bar. Fantastic night, great
crowd, the place was heaving all night! Thanks to Jo and her staff for their
hospitality, we're certainly looking forward to returning in November.
Wow!! What a
weekend! Friday 3rd - The Lord Harrowby, Grantham - First of John's legendary
Beer Festivals this year. Dry night weather wise but not as far as the beer was
concerned! Many a fine tune played and many a fine beer consumed, (by
those who weren't driving of course!) Thanks to all that came down to support
the pub and live music and especially John for inviting us to play once again.
We look forward to returning again in the future.
Sunday 5th -
The Navigation, Newark - You simply cannot beat a busy Bank Holiday Sunday Night
down the Nav!! Pub filled to bursting with lots of new faces and familiar
friends of the band. Fantastic night topped off with a magnificent rendition of
Van Halen's classic 'Jump' performed by former bassist Ian "Lobba" Dobbs!! Great
to have him back on stage again. We've secured a return booking for August Bank
Holiday Sunday so if this Sunday was anything to go by, should be another
cracking night!
Monday 6th -
Kelham Hall & Country Park, Newark - Family Fun Day - This event was organised
and run by Kelham Hall Ltd who have taken over the running of the ground floor
of the old part of the complex including the Dome, Carriage Court, Drawing Room
and Music Room. The Band were contacted on Thursday and invited to play in a
marquee in the garden during the day and were pleased to be able to oblige. It
was a fantastic day weather wise and the turnout was excellent. We're looking
forward to working with the event organiser again in the future for weddings and
functions at the hall. Check out
www.kelham-hall.com for more info.
April
2013
Friday 26th -
The Harrow Inn, Ollerton - Over a year since we've been to The Harrow due to the
previous landlord pulling the plug on live bands. The pub is now under new
management and once again bands are back on the menu. Unfortunately not many in
for a Friday night but we certainly enjoyed ourselves as always. Maybe be back
here on a Saturday night later in the year, keep an eye on the Gigs page.
Sunday 21st -
The Moorings, Newark - Been a while since we've played at The Moorings, last
October in fact. Great to be back! had a fantastic night with a good turn out.
Thanks to everyone that came out to see us, we'll be chasing up the management
for another gig hopefully later in the year. We're at The Harrow Inn in Ollerton
this coming Friday and our next outing in Newark is on Sunday the 5th May at The
Navigation. It's a Bank Holiday Weekend, so there's no excuse not to come down
for a boogie! See ya'll later!
March
2013
Friday 29th -
The Chesters, Balderton - First outing to the Chesters this year and also as the
new three piece line up. Played all our new material and some re worked songs
from our four piece days. Busy night in the bar with a great crowd, thanks to
Michael and his staff as always, looking forward to coming back in June,
hopefully the weather will have warned up by then!!
Friday 22nd &
Saturday 23rd - Busy weekend!! Friday night saw us at Newark Golf Club
entertaining 170 people at British Sugar's end of campaign dinner dance. Then a
return to Newark Showground for the UK Spring Motorhome & Caravan Show in "The
Pig & Whistle" (aka The Sir Stuart Goodwin Pavilion). Unfortunately the good old
British weather decided to take it's ball home as usual somewhat curtailing the
expected turnout with some of the overnight campers deciding they had had enough
and setting off home earlier in the day. A great gig nevertheless and our thanks
go to all the remaining campers who ventured out of their cosy motorhomes and
caravans on what could only be described as a bitterly cold night! Also to Russ
and his team at
Event
Developments Ltdfor giving us the opportunity to entertain you all
once more!
Roll on
Summer!!
Wednesday 6th -
The Castle Pub, Newark - First of our four gigs lined up for The Castle this
year, great gig as always with a decent sized crowd in for a midweek gig. We
have recently bought a new toy to play with and it had it's first outing on
Wednesday, A Mackie DL1608 Digital mixing desk with remote iPad control! This
enables our sound engineer to mix the band from the comfort of his barstool next
to the Doom Bar pump! A few teething problems led to a longer than usual setup
and sound check but all in all a valuable and useful purchase for smaller venues
with a lack of space to have a desk out front. Next gig though, Newark
Showground for the Motorhome show, we'll be back to the "Full American Stage
Show!" Lol!!
February 2013
Friday 8th -
The Navigation, Newark - First gig back after Christmas and in the new three
piece format. Moving the bands to Fridays certainly seems to be paying off at
what is still probably Newark's finest music venue. We played two sets to a
packed pub including four new songs that we have been working on through
January, 'Dire Straits - Walk of Life' 'REM - The One I Love' 'ELO - Hold on
Tight to Your Dreams' & 'Robbie Williams - Angels' were all well received
additions to our ever increasing repertoire and there's more in the pipeline
for 2013!
IIt
is with great sadness that we have to announce that THE BUSINESS is no longer a
four piece, Lobba has decided that he can no longer commit the time that he
would like to the band and has therefore decided to leave. This decision had
already been made prior to the above article going to press in The Newark
Advertiser on Thursday but to go ahead with the write up as a four piece seemed
a fitting tribute to Lobba's time with the band and marked the end of an era. We
plan to continue for the immediate future as a three piece but will be looking
to recruit a replacement Bass Player over the coming months. The rest of the
guys would like to take the opportunity to thank Lobba for his services to the
band over the last six years and wish him every success with any future
enterprise, we'll certainly miss him!!
December 2012
Saturday 22nd -
The Castle, Newark - Can't think of a better way to finish 2012 than a gig at
The Castle! Superb night as always in this smashing little Ale House in Newark.
Fantastic turnout with the pub filled to capacity. Thanks to everyone that
turned out to see us through 2012 and here's to a great 2013. Happy New Year
everyone!!
November 2012
Saturday 24th -
The Chesters, Balderton - This gig was re arranged from December as we're back
at The Chesters on the 21st Dec for the Sold Out Party Night upstairs in the
function room. First time we've played at Chesters on a Saturday and we weren't
disappointed! Good sized crowd in the bar all night and a great warm up for the
Party Gig. Looking forward to the 21st, should be a fantastic night!
Sunday 11th -
The Navigation, Newark - And then there were three! Due to Mr Dobbs going down
with a serious bout of "Man Flu" (Not been keeping up his intake of McCoys!) we
played the gig as a three piece. After much recording and programming of Bass
tracks into the wee small hours on Saturday night we managed to put together
enough material to put on a show up to our normal high standards. Good turn out
as usual, thanks to everyone that came out to support us. We'll be back at the
Nav on the 8th February next year as the Live Music Night moves from Sunday to
Friday after Christmas. We also wish the 'Lobster' a speedy recovery from the
flu and look forward to him rejoining the ranks.
October 2012
Sunday 14th -
The Moorings, Newark - Good to be back at this relatively new venue in Newark,
set up in the bar again, the venue has decided after a period of time having
bands in the restaurant area to move them back to the bar to create a better
atmosphere. It certainly worked last night! Hope to be arranging some more dates
at The Moorings for the New Year. See you all down The Navigation on the 11th
November.
Saturday 6th -
The Lincoln Green, North Hykeham - This was our third visit to The Lincoln
Green, another enjoyable evening with a good turnout of enthusiastic locals
despite there being a few thick heads in the place due to a party on the
Saturday night! Thanks to everyone that came down to see us, hopefully be back
in the New Year.
September 2012
Friday 14th -
The Chester, fast becoming one of our favourite venues! With the Party season
fast approaching we decided to try out some new 'party' material for pub
regulars and fans both old and new, we think it went down pretty well judging by
the comments received. We're currently working on more material including
classics from Bon Jovi and Queen to name but two! We'll be back at The Chesters
in December for the Party to a Party Night on the 21st which has been moved from
the Community Centre to upstairs in Chesters. Tickets for the event are
available from Michael at Chesters.
Saturday 1st -
The Castle, Newark - Yet another great gig at The Castle, busiest it's ever been
as far as we can remember, the numbers were up due to a hen party calling by
during the first set. Congratulations to the Bride to be, hope you didn't get to
drunk by the end of the night! Many thanks to everyone that came down to see us,
we'll be back at The Castle in December for the Christmas Party. See ya then!
August 2012
Saturday 11th -
The Lord Harrowby, Grantham - First time at a new venue Grantham. The Lord
Harrowby is situated on Dudley Road and is renowned for it's Real Ale Festivals,
which I think it holds twice a year (John, please correct me if I'm wrong!) On
offer last night were 25 Ales from both near and far, we managed to sample a few
good brews before, between and after the sets (Very nice they were too!) We set
up in a small marquee in the yard of the pub on what turned out to be a warm dry
August evening (for a change!) to entertain the assembled enthusiastic crowd.
Three encores! so I guess they enjoyed us! We would like to thank John for
inviting us to play and look forward to a welcome return next summer.
Sunday 5th -
The Navigation, Newark - Good to be back on the road after our summer break,
this was our second gig at the Nav since it re opened under new management
earlier in the year. With two other pubs in town now having bands on Sundays and
the Olympics on the TV we were very pleased with the turnout. During our pre gig
warm up rehearsal on Friday, we decided to resurrect some classic songs that we
haven't played for a while including Cutting Crew's, "(I Just) Died In Your Arms
Tonight" and Christopher Cross's "Ride Like The Wind" which we think met with
the approval of the assembled crowd. We planned to finish the first set in time
to watch Usain Bolt run the 100m final on the TV, but the bugger ran too fast
and had his Gold before we'd finished "Born to be Wild"!! Thanks to all who
turned out to support us and Ian and his staff for making us so welcome. We're
looking forward to returning to the Nav again later in the year.
July
2012
The guys are
all currently on their summer vacation! Next gig will be at The 'New' Navigation
on Sunday 5th August, where we'll be rested and raring to go! Hope to see you
all down there!
The gig at
Chesters in November has been moved from Friday 16th to Saturday 24th, make sure
you update your diaries!!
*REMEMBER - Video footage
of the band can now be found on the Download page!
June
2012
Friday 15th - Chesters, Balderton - England played Sweden in Euro 2012
and won 3-2!! We arrived nice and early, set up, sound checked and watched the
match with the locals. Great match and a good result for England! After the
final whistle we played a single set of 1 hour 45 mins to an enthusiastic crowd
in good spirits thanks to the England result! Thanks once again to Michael and
his staff and everyone who came down to see us.
The Business
have been booked to play at The Lord Harrowby, Grantham on Saturday the 11th
August as part of their Beer Festival. Weather permitting we will be outside in
a Marquee! If the good old British weather does it's worst we'll be inside in
the Bar. Why not pop along and try some of the Ales on tap and listen to some
quality music.
Saturday
3rd - The Lincoln Green, North Hykeham - A long awaited return to this 'Lively'
back room bar at the newly refurbished Lincoln Green Pub. Last time we were here
there was 5" of snow on the ground, a bit warmer this time! When we arrived at
6.30pm to start setting up the place was heaving! Thanks to everyone who hung
around after the 'footy' and whatever party had been on, we sincerely hope you
enjoyed the evenings entertainment.... we certainly did!!
Hope to
see you all again when we return on October 6th!
May
2012
Sunday 20th
- The Moorings - Our debut gig at The Moorings since they started putting
bands on on Sunday nights. The bands set up at present in the main bar with
their backs to the picturesque views of the River Trent. This set up may change
in the future as there are plans to set the bands up in the larger restaurant
area up a small staircase from the bar. A small cosy venue as it stands with
comfy chairs and many familiar faces, a great night of entertainment was enjoyed
by all! Looking forward to returning some time later this year or early next.
Sunday 6th -
The Navigation, Newark - The Nav is definitely back! First Sunday session since
it re-opened under new management. Fantastic turn out, thanks to all old and new
that came to see us. We've got another couple of dates in the diary this year
for this great live music venue.
April
2012
The
Navigation has now re-opened under new management and is starting to host Live
Music again. The official opening is Thursday 4th May and we are pleased to
announce that we have been booked to play on Sunday 6th May. Very much looking
forward to playing at this great venue again and wish Ian all the best with his
new venture.
Wednesday
18th - The Castle, Newark - First outing to The Castle this year, always a great
gig, this was no exception! Thanks to all that ventured out in the lousy
British weather to see us. Certainly didn't dampen your spirits.
March
2012
Friday
23rd/Saturday 24th - This weekend saw us play two gigs, Friday night at Chesters
in Balderton and Saturday at the UK Motorhome and Caravan Spring Fair at Newark
Show Ground. The weekend started on a high with another great Friday night at
Chesters. Good turnout with some new faces in the Bar, we always enjoy playing
at this fantastic pub venue. Thanks once again to Michael and his staff, we'll
be back at Chesters on the 15th June.
Having never played at a
Motorhome and Caravan Spring Fair before, we were not sure what to expect when
we arrived at Newark Showground to begin setting up. The nights entertainment
for the 1000+ campers included The Grumbleweeds and Chequers Showband in the
Cedric Ford Pavilion and The Business in The Sir Stuart Goodwin Pavilion,
renamed the 'The Pig & Whistle' for the evening to create a pub style venue. By
7pm we had finished setting up and sound checking and reports came in that the
queue to get into the Cedric Ford was about 300 yards long and people had
started to gather outside The Pig & Whistle waiting for the doors to open. By
the time we took to the stage at 8.30pm the venue was up to capacity. We played
two sets including most of our repertoire and by the end of the second set the
place was rockin' culminating in the crowd demanding some three encores! We
thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have already been asked to appear again next
year, which we're all very much looking forward to. Thanks to everyone that came
to support us and to Russ and the team at
Event
Developments Ltd for giving us the opportunity to entertain you all!
*** The
Gig on the 5th May at The Harrow Inn, Ollerton has been cancelled. Apparently
the Landlord has pulled the plug on staging Live Bands ***
Friday
2nd - The Rutland Arms, Newark - Another first for us, never played at The
Rutland before. Great night and a good turnout for what's usually a quiet night
in this pub. Many members of The Business Fan club in attendance and the wine
was flowing nicely! First time out for a few new songs including, Disco 2000 -
Pulp, All I Need Is A Miracle - Mike And The Mechanics and Bohemian Like You by
The Dandy Warhols. Will be back at The Rutland later in the year, don't forget
to check out the Gigs page regularly.
February

Saturday 4th
- The Lincoln Green, North Hykeham, Lincoln - First gig at this Lincoln Pub. Had
a good time despite the 4" snow falling between 5pm and midnight which may have
deterred some of the locals and people who normally travel to see us. Looking
forward to coming back to play here sometime during the summer when the pub re
opens after it's forthcoming refurb. Many thanks to the locals that braved the
weather and the staff for their warm hospitality.
January
2012
Saturday
7th - The Harrow Inn, Ollerton - First outing to this new venue for us. I
believe this is a new idea by one of the regulars to introduce bands to the
locals at the pub, who are more used to seeing duo's and solo artists for their
Saturday night entertainment. Good sized crowd and some familiar faces from the
Eakring posse! We're booked to play here again in May so we look forward to
seeing you all then.
December
2011
Saturday
31st - The
Business played at the first New Years Eve celebration in over 20 years at Newark Rugby Club!
Despite a relatively poor turnout a great night was had by all in attendance and
the guys welcomed in the New Year with a Bang! May we wish you all a Happy New
Year and look forward to entertaining you again in 2012!
Wednesday
21st - The Castle, Newark - "So Here It Is, Merry Christmas" as Noddy once said!
Another truly enjoyable evening at The Castle. Great to see everyone down there
for the Christmas Bash. Wigs, frilly shirts, Bermuda shorts, blow up guitars and
copious amounts of Rev James!! Need I say more? Click on the link below to view
the pictures of the evening.
Sunday
18th - The Chesters, Balderton - With the recent sad loss of the Navigation as a
live music venue many local pubs are looking to take over the Sunday night slot.
We had the pleasure of being the second band to play a Sunday at The Chesters,
which is a new venture for landlord Michael. It was a good turn out and a great
night, many familiar faces from The Nav and The Business fan club were in
attendance. We would like to wish Michael every success with Sunday nights and
if this does becomes regular Sunday night venue we're sure to back in the New
Year.
November

thoroughly enjoyed playing again for fans new and old!
Saturday

in, if live bands become a regular feature on Saturdays we're sure to be back
some time in the future. Keep an eye on the Gigs page for further updates.

was no exception! Great turnout as usual, thanks to everyone who came down to
see us. We'll be back at The Castle on the 21st December for a Christmas
Special!!
The
Business have been back to
Tabby Road Studios to record some new demo
tracks for promotional purposes. Recording of five new tracks was completed on
the 2nd & 3rd September and we're heading back on the 19th to carry out the
final mix down. CD's should be available to perspective customers or anyone that
wants one at the gig at The Castle on 24th September. All tracks will also be
downloadable from the Downloads
page on this Website.

Saturday
28th - The Robin Hood & Little John, Aslackby - First visit to this country inn
situated on the A15 between Sleaford and Bourne. We played outside on the back
of a trailer in a very pleasant Beer Garden at the side of the pub to a small
but enthusiastic crowd that had braved the somewhat autumnal August Bank Holiday
weather! BBQ food washed down with plenty of Bateman's XB, a good night was had
by all. Not sure whether bands are to be a regular feature at the pub but we're
certainly up for a return visit if invited back in the New Year.
Sunday
21st - The Navigation, Newark - Another great gig at The Nav!! We decided to
play one set this time and played for 2 hours and 10 mins! How's that for
value!! Thanks to everyone that came down to support us, great turnout and some
new faces in the crowd. We're looking forward to being back at the Nav at
Christmas. See y'all then!
Remember
to check out all the other great bands on at the Nav in the meantime, details

Friday
15th - The Chesters, Balderton - Friday Night at Chesters is always a good one!
Had a great time playing to a very appreciative crowd. Back here in October,
once again thanks to
Michael and his staff for making us feel so
welcome!
June

Friday
17th - Newark LocAle & Weinfest, Castle Grounds, Newark. The Business
headlined Friday night's entertainment at the 2nd Newark LocAle & Weinfest in
the picturesque Castle grounds. The festival organised by Newark Town Council is
a biennial event involving Newark's twin town, Emmendingen, situated in the
Breisgau wine producing area of the Black Forest in Germany. Anyway, enough of
the history lesson, the guys took to the stage around 9pm and played a 1 and a
half hour set to an enthusiastic if somewhat damp crowd who had braved the crap
British weather to sample the fine wines from Germany, numerous local ales and
quality entertainment on tap. The Business would like to thank all our devoted
fans, Newark Town Council and everyone else involved in organising the event and
look forward to being invited to play again in 2013.
Wedsnesday 15th - The Castle, Newark - Second visit to The Castle this year,
great turnout once more, aired some more new songs in front of the usual very
enthusiastic crowd. Classic Rock & Pop tunes from the 70's to present day washed
down with a few pints of Doom Bar! Can't beat it!!
May

a busy Saturday night with many familiar faces and some new ones too! Thanks to
everyone that came out to see us. Looking forward to returning later in the
year.
Friday
6th - The Angel Inn, Kneesall - Great gig and a great turnout, busiest night yet
at this country pub venue. Loud and enthusiastic crowd as usual swelled by the
whole of Eakring turning out! Many thanks to all who travelled to see us and
Paula and her team for making us so welcome. We'll be back later in the year
around Bonfire Night, keep an eye on the Gigs page.

Saturday
9th - The Castle Pub, Newark - Wow! What a Night! What a
Turnout! It's always fantastic to play to a full pub and it was certainly
that at The Castle on Saturday. We all had a great night and enjoyed playing for
everyone that packed into this brilliant pub. One or two new songs in the set
and the return of one or two others all went down well. Thanks to Hel & Wayne
for making us so welcome and especially Hel for this great quote from Facebook:-
"We have just had one of
the best bands in town,
playing the best music
around, in the best pub
for live music this side
of mars. A HUGE thanks
and hugs to the
Business, you guys rock
with a capital RRRRR. If
you were not there to
witness this
awesomeness, shame on
you.......hx"
Looking
forward to returning in June!

Thursday
3rd - The Talbot Inn, Mansfield - Great to back at this lively venue in Mansfield. Been
just over a year since we were last here and a few alterations have been made to
make the venue more 'band' friendly to good effect. Still get a good crowd
in on a Thursday to support the bands which is great. Look forward to returning
in June.
February 2011
Tuesday
8th - Please note: The Gig at The Talbot Inn, Mansfield has been moved to the
3rd March from the 24th.

were in the house once more and in fine voice, (I'm sure they've been
practising!) Thanks to Paula for putting up with us again and everyone who
turned out to support us. Looking forward to returning in May, hopefully it'll
be a warm, dry evening and we may even be able to play outside!

December 2010
Saturday
11th - The Grove Inn, Balderton - First time at this venue, interesting set up.
Had a good night, some familiar faces turned out to see us. Pub is currently
being run by a relief manager so we may get back here in 2011, keep an eye on
the gigs page for more info.
Friday
3rd - The Barge & Bottle, Sleaford - It was with much reluctance and great
regret that we had to cancel last night's gig due to the poor weather
conditions. We spent all week hoping that the snow would eventually stop
falling, but had to make the decision to pull out purely on safety grounds. The
risk of travelling from Newark to Sleaford and back in snow and icy conditions
with all the gear in the van was considered too great.
May we
take this opportunity to apologise to the management at the Barge and to anyone
who braved the conditions to come out and see us. We hope to be back at this
great venue some time in the New Year.
November 2010
Friday
26th - The Angel Inn, Kneesall - The Angel has recently started having bands on
a Friday and this was our first outing there. Had a magnificent night! Thanks
to Paula and the staff for making us so welcome and the marvellous backing
singers from Eakring!! (You know who you are girls!) We hope
the band night is a success and well supported and look forward to seeing you
all again when we return on the 4th February next year.

The
Castle is a real ale and live music pub and has live music most nights. Check
out the website at:-
Friday
19th - First gig at the Chesters in Balderton. We didn't realise what a great
venue this is. Wonderful stage area in the bar with lights and smoke effects
courtesy of Michael the Landlord. Enthusiastic crowd and management make this a
must for music in the Newark area. We are certainly looking forward to returning
in July.
